Welcome to my First Day!

Today I went back to Middle School. And the strange thing, is that there were a lot of similarities to my own Middle School. Not only is the layout of the building very similar, but the types of kids in the classroom are remarkably the same as well. Throughout the day, I found myself comparing many of the students to kids that I went to school with in Corvallis.

I was so nervous when I pulled into the parking lot. I thought I was going to vomit. But from the very moment I met with my cooperating teacher, I felt very at ease. She is the nicest lady and SO down to earth! I had so much fun today, and the school day zipped by!!

The kids were great, too! My cooperating teacher has 2 reading groups, a writing class, an AVID class, and then goes into other classrooms to help with reading comprehension. There is a lot of running around, but that probably makes the day go by faster, right? I will probably be doing my work sample on writing an essay. It's my choice which kind of essay (except for a personal narrative because they are doing that in other classes right now and will be sick of it). I wish I would have done more practice in my MAT classes for teaching writing, but I feel confident I will come up with something great.

I can't wait to go back tomorrow!!

Practicum Teaching: Day 1

Reposted from my personal blog:

Today is the kickoff event for my first student teaching experience: My Practicum. For those who may not know I am in Highschool math teaching Geometry and Functions/Trig. There is not much to report on my first day. The students are generally well behaved. My cooperating teacher has a total of around 5 IEP and 504s in all of her classes. Also filed in uninteresting news I got my IT information put together, and my big unit plan will be on either Pythagorean theory for geometry or Logs in Func/Trig.

I did confiscate my first cellphone today. It was in the last 10 minutes of the day so it was not much of a punishment. I had the student repeat the rule back to me, warned him that next time it will get worse, and handed the phone back to him. For my real classroom I plan on installing a Faraday cage to block all cell phone reception! Perhaps I'll put the mesh behind all the posters lining the walls....

YAY!

Can you believe we are FINALLY about to embark on our practicum/student teaching adventure!?! It feels like we started this program forever ago; yet, it also feels like it is all happening so fast!

It all is very bittersweet and stress inducing for me...I cannot wait for the experience and the teaching certificate but I am also extremely sad about leaving my current students, staff and school...Over the past two years, Mill Park has become my second home and I have developed phenomenal relationships with students and teachers--ones I will never forget! My last day is Monday and I plan on wearing NO makeup because I know I will certainly cry... I honestly begin to miss the kids after one week of vacation! WAA! WAA! :(

There is really no true purpose for this entry...Just really wanted to share how insane this whole thing is for me (as I am sure it is for you guys too!)

Lastly, thank you Kyle Hall for coming up with this idea. Not only do we get to keep in touch and share experiences but we also get to use our Ed.Tech. edumacation! (and how many times will this ever happen again? ha!)

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE! I shall see you all tomorrow for the pre-student teacher meeting!

BTW, where/what is everyone doing their student teachings?
Practicum: Cleveland High School---Senior English and Theory of Knowledge
Student Teaching:  Mt. Scott Elementary School---6th Grade (all subjects) + Outdoor School!

Hello Everyone!

Hey everyone!  I had mentioned to a few of you during our last Kennedy School outing that I wanted to create a blog for everyone to have access to to share stories, words of wisdom, advice, or anything else pertaining to our practicum/student teaching experience.  I created the profile so that everyone can have access to logging into this blog and posting something.  When posting something I would make sure to let everyone know who is writing the post.  If you want to comment on somebody's blog post they created then I would suggest signing into your own account that we had to create for that online technology class and then posting comments from there.  That way people will be able to clearly see who is responding to their posts.  I really think that this could be a lot of fun.  I know that I would love to stay in touch with everyone and I feel that this is the best way to do it.  Have fun with this and write whatever you want!  Good luck to everyone on their upcoming practicums!
